Import your Character.AI characters and chat history into FurChat

What is happening to Character.AI?

On October 12, 2026, Character.AI began a voluntary Chapter 11 case so the business can be sold under court supervision. As of November 2, the service is still online and has not shut down. The company expects the sale to wrap up around the end of November or early December, and says it will wind the platform down if no acceptable bid comes in.

Export your Character.AI data

Do this part first, even if you have not chosen where to go. According to KQED, the help center warns that exports can take three to four weeks, and the link it emails you stops working after seven days.

1. In Character.AI, go to your profile and open Settings.
2. Under Account, open Manage account & data and pick Export data. The app keeps this under Settings too.
3. When the email arrives, download the ZIP right away and keep it somewhere safe.

Bring it into FurChat

1. Go to the FurChat importer and drop the ZIP in without unzipping it. A locked ZIP is opened on your own device with your account email.
2. Tick the characters and conversations you want to keep.
3. Look over the profile FurChat drafts for each character and adjust it if something is off.
4. Import, open a conversation, and reply. Your character picks up from the last message.

No export yet? The free CAI Tools extension for desktop browsers saves one conversation at a time as a Tavern chat file, along with a Character Card (PNG). It is an unofficial tool by someone else, and FurChat reads what it produces. Pasting a chat as plain text works as well.

The official export has no published format, so if yours does not read, try one of those routes.

A Character.AI alternative for furry roleplay

FurChat was built around anthro characters and adult stories. Pictures are drawn during the conversation in a furry art style, and characters can answer out loud. There is also a library of public characters to meet once your own have settled in.

Not every character you bring has to be furry. The importer looks at each one's body type and draws human and humanoid characters in a realistic style, or you can choose the style yourself.

Two things to know before you move: characters who are minors or portray real people are refused, along with their chats, and token purchases are crypto-only. Every account gets 100 free tokens each day, and pricing lists the packs.

Questions

How much does it cost to import?

Nothing for your first 10 characters and 25 chats. Beyond that it is 10 tokens per character or chat, or 25 for a chat longer than 1,000 messages. The price is shown before anything is charged.

Does my character remember everything?

They get your newest messages word for word and a condensed memory of what came before, so a very long story is remembered in outline rather than line by line. A long chat may need a moment to catch up first.

Is my Character.AI login needed?

No. FurChat never asks for it and never connects to Character.AI. The files are read in your browser, and only what you select is uploaded.

Are imported chats private?

Yes. They stay on your account, and characters you import cannot be shared publicly.

Can I import on my phone?

Yes, if you have the official export ZIP or text to paste. The CAI Tools extension needs a computer.

Is FurChat connected to Character.AI?

No. FurChat is a separate service, with no affiliation with or endorsement from Character.AI. We mention the name only to describe the files you can bring.
